The standard character set supported by SMS is defined by the GSMA as 7-bit.
The platform also supports 8 and 16 bit character sets to allow for advance character sets including Chinese characters etc.
When sending a WebSMS+/Broadcast message your standard text box appears as below:

If you use an 8 bit character set, i.e. < " > (quotation mark) character cut and pasted from Microsoft Word, then the message will be shortened to 140 characters per message segment, and the preview box will display all 8 bit characters in orange. Example:
If you use a 16 bit character set, i.e. Chinese characters then the message will be shortened to 70 characters per message segment and the preview box will display all 16 bit characters in red.
